Blue and Gold Succulent Pots

DIY Blue and Gold Succulent Pots for Boyscout Blue and Gold Dinner

:: Blue and Gold Succulent Pots ::

Spring has sprung and I am all about being practical.  A couple of weeks ago we celebrated The Blue and Gold Dinner for our Boy Scout Troop.  Instead of making an impractical centerpiece; our den along with some parental guidance {hmm, hmm} created these lovely Blue and Gold Succulent Pots. Perfect for a spring display both inside or out.  These succulent pots take very little water and what is best of all, an added tent, pictures, and a small fire {made out of sticks and tissue} make these Blue and Gold Succulent Pots a fantastic desert survival themed centerpiece!

These Blue and Gold Succulent Pots started off as basic terra cotta pots. I found these plain pots at The Home Depot. Here is what is needed to create these pots.  I added some additional supplies, should you like to use them as Boy Scout centerpieces.  If not, they make for beautiful succulent pots.

1 can of gold spray paint

2 small bottles of blue craft paint

Painter’s tape

Terra cotta pots plus water bases

Cactus potting mix for succulents

Small river rocks

Succulents {4 small per pot}

For survival theme pots add:

Brown tents cut from brown paper bag ends

Boys’ pictures glued to Popsicle sticks

Broken sticks tied together by string

Red and yellow tissue paper cut and added to the sticks.

Terra Cotta Pots before spray paint.

I made four centerpieces for our themed tables. At the end of the evening we raffled off the pots to the parents in our den.

First I laid out a drop cloth (newspaper can be used, too).  I added painter’s tape under the base or lip of the Terra Cotta pot. Next I spray painted the top of the pot with gold spray paint, as well as the water base.

Once dried, I removed the tape, and carefully painted each pot with dark blue craft paint.  Let them dry for a couple hours, if possible.

Next, at the base of each pot I added a few river rocks that help with the irrigation of the water of each of these Blue and Gold Succulent Pots.

After the rocks are added, fill each pot 3/4 of the way with potting mix.  Add 3 to four small succulents to the pot and top with more soil or moss. succulents foe blue and gold pots

I used small potted succulents, as well as some from my own succulent plants.  Did you know that you can cut the blooms of a plant and they make a whole new plant? Okay, so I sound like a crazy succulent lady, but it’s true and it’s often how I make additional succulent planters.

There you have a beautiful yet drought tolerant Blue and Gold Succulent Pots. These pots are fun as a gift or as centerpieces for your next event… or my favorite Blue and Gold Boy Scout Dinner.

Thanks Liz…I went out on a limb with this one as I wanted the centerpieces to be repurposed as something I would like in my home. Easy to convince this to a bunch of 8 year old boys. πŸ˜‰
