Celebrating Age

Life is adventure

 :: Celebrating Age ::

Last week I had the pleasure of celebrating my Grandma’s lovely age of 91.  I write this post with a full heart, as my grandmother has been a big figure in my life.  She is a little lady full of sass, spirit, and love.  My grandma, as I had always called her “little grandma”, Blanca had always lived near by. For most of my childhood she lived around the block from my family, and for a small amount of time my sister Candice and I lived with her and my grandfather (along with my mom) in their house after my parents’ divorce.  I cannot put into words how much I love her.  She has taught me that life is an adventure.  She is of Spanish and French decent.  Her parents moved to Mexico from Spain where they raised their large brood of children. They were well to do and of high society at the time, so in turn, my grandma Blanca has always had a fashionable air about her.  I have always remembered being in the back seat of her Cadillac and listening to Linda Ronstadt.  She loves shopping and shoes. To this day she will ask me to switch shoes with her.  My sister and I would love to play house with all of her amazing boxed shoes and small mink coats. She owned costume jewelry and fun wigs when she was in between hair washes.

My grandmother is a woman of faith.  She taught me to have respect for church and we loved going with her and my grandfather.  Blanca will make the sign of the cross every time she passes a Catholic Church.  She has loved deeply and lost loves.  My grandfather Joe, was very special to me as well. He has been gone 2o years this past August.  It has been hard for my grandma at times… but her 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren have helped to her to continue to enjoy life.  Simply Amazing!

She loves her family deeply, as we do her.  I am so very blessed to have her in my life.  I really do believe the age of 91 is worth celebrating!  I am thankful for every moment I have enjoyed and learned from her. Cheers to her!  Happy birthday to my sweet grandma Blanca!  I hope to continue on with some of your traditions, but most of all… your love for family. As she always says, “Via con dios.”

  1. Aww Nicole, I love this post! I remember your Grandma so well! She was always cooking something yummy in the kitchen when we were out back swimming. I’m so happy to hear she is doing well, and she looks great too, as always! You are blessed to have her in your life for so long.
