Weekend Lovelies {favorite things}

February 15, 2014

be someone who makes someone else look forward to tomorrow {via simply happenstance}

 :: Weekend Lovelies {favorite things} ::

How was your LOVE day?! Perfectly romantic and exciting, I hope! My husby is currently working a 72-hr. shift, so the kids and I had fun crafting the day away! I stayed up entirely too late the night before, making heart garland, and preparing a festive table for them to wake up to. {I’m sure lots of us mamas were up late decorating for our sweet little ones!}

So… this weekend, Nicole and I have a fun list of favorites for you to enjoy! Some beauty, design, recipes, style… and even a darling video to share with you! If you are a blogger or have an Etsy shop, we’d be thrilled if you’d link-up to our favorite things! Enjoy the weekend, friends… and feel free to say “hello” by leaving a comment below! {xo} [Read more…]

Happy Weekend!

Here are some of our favorite finds with focus on keeping things simple {natural, holistic, organic, earthy…. or whatever you’d like to call it}!

We hope that you are able to delve into the articles & videos, find something that makes you think, & hopefully smile!

Enjoy! {xo}

Earthling Month // Whole Foods

I am loving this Earthling Month movement by Whole Foods Market! What is an Earthling, you ask? “Earthlings are people that care about the world around them. Every day during Earth Month, we’re exploring the moments that make us more than human. See what other Earthlings are doing, learn something new, and add a moment of your own via Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.”

What do you do in your home to teach your children about caring for our beautiful planet? We are going to do a small vegetable garden in pots on our porch soon… and are hoping to spend lots of summer days spent rummaging through our local farmer’s markets. We are trying hard to not eat things with labels, and instead… making whole, fresh foods at home.

Living with Less. A Lot Less. // NY Times

The title of this NY Times article speaks for itself. I wish everyone would read this and really take it to heart… Our family is in the process of making some big changes in a quest to simplify our lives which I talked about {here}. What’s your reaction to this piece?

Small Changes Equal Big Results

January 21, 2013

“One small change can lead to another,

forming a spiral of success.”

Leo Babauta {Zen Habits}

I have a confession to make…

I am a chubby vegan.

Okay, just kidding!

I’m not 100% vegan anymore,

but I do try to eat as vegan as possible when home.

Who would have thought you could cut out all meat, eggs and dairy and still have weight issues?

Hmm…

guess what?

That’s me!

Yes, I LOVE vegetables…

I LOVE  lentils,

I LOVE beans…

I like fruit….

but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE sweets!!

I LOVE Starbucks,

I LOVE cookies and cake and brownies…

Eating sweets have become my vice.

We all have one, right?!!

I have had four kids.

I have never struggled with my weight like this until after baby #4

{although mr. amazing was worth every extra pound – wink, wink}!

Something tells me that it’s just this vicious cycle

in my life right now of being stressed out

{just like all mothers are}

and not finding enough time in the day to make myself a decent healthy meal,

but instead feeding my body with leftover bits of food on the kids plates…

or worse yet…

going through much of the day on a cup of coffee and not much else.

3 p.m. rolls around and I am ravenous…

therefore gorging on whatever food I can get my hands on

to banish the shakiness that comes from low-blood sugar.

I also tend to go to bed really late.

I love that mommy time when the kids go to bed and the house is finally quiet.

I either work on our blog,

rummage through the web,

or settle on the couch for some t.v. time that doesn’t require any mental effort.

It is on these couch nights…

{especially when Husby is at work for a few days},

that I find a large bowl of ice cream in my hands.

Without any thought I dig in,

and before long,

find myself scraping the sides of the bowl with my spoon…

finished.

It’s a dreadful cycle…

really.

One that I have known for sometime now that I needed to break.

 ***********************************

About eight months ago,

I stopped nursing Finn.

I seriously gained more than ten pounds in the two months thereafter.

I knew that I needed to pick up the exercise,

{because this had happened to me in the past},

but clearly I didn’t.

Now…

with my 35th birthday approaching,

I decided the time is now to focus on implementing some small healthy habits.

Taking the advice of some of my dearest friends,

I arranged to have a physical and have blood work done.

Honestly…

between you and me…

I was praying for a thyroid issue to explain my weight gain

{surely it wasn’t the extra coffee and sweets I had been eating!!}.

I know it’s horrible to silently pray that you have a thyroid issue…

but come on girls…

don’t we all secretly think that could be our issue and explanation for those love handles??

Well…

as you may have guessed…

it wasn’t mine

{*sigh*}.

It must be the cookies… cake… brownies… ice cream….chocolate…. and coffee.

I have 20 pounds to lose.

{perhaps I shouldn’t focus on the number}….

I have some extra heaviness to lose

{especially in my mid-section},

that’s been a bit of a struggle to deal with when doing certain yoga positions.

I don’t feel as light on my feet as I should.

I’m lacking some energy in the mid-afternoon,

and get a bit out of breath when carrying Finn up our three flights of stairs.

It’s time for a change.

Instead of doing anything too crazy drastic,

I am going to focus on a few babysteps.

I’ve always been a bit obsessed with nutrition books,

and have even spent some time with a wonderful nutritionist

who taught me lots of valuable information.

I know what works for my body,

so really it’s just making the hard commitment

and putting a little more focus and time into myself.

Small changes = Big Results {over time}…

so here is my plan for better health:

**Note: click on the bolded, all capitalized words for more detailed research/information**

1. Increase my water consumption

2. Work on getting more sleep

3. Incorporate stress relief

 {massage, yoga, meditation, breathing techniques}

4. Consistent exercise

 {my focus will be on hot yoga, walking/running}

5. Attempt mindful eating

6. Focus on Portion control

7. Incorporating low-glycemic index foods into my diet

8. Linking proteins with carbohydrates for more balanced meals

9. Adding more fiber throughout the day

10. Attempting to eliminate the white stuff in my diet

{white sugar and flour}

  ***********************************

“Your health is what you make of it.

Everything you do and think

either adds to

the vitality, energy and spirit you possess

or takes away from it.”

{Ann Wigmore}

 ***********************************

Although I sincerely wish I could make all of these vital changes at once,

I am trying to be realistic.

I am going to implement a few of the 10 steps I listed,

little-by-litte,

and see how it goes.

I will keep you updated along the way,

and try to point out specific things that I found to work to make these babysteps a bit easier.

I am going back to my doctor in three months for a WEIGHT CHECK!!

Seriously embarrassing,

but I am glad that he is holding me accountable.

That is about the time I will be turning 35.

Fingers crossed that I have the motivation and willpower to do this!

I am hopefully optimistic that I will have good news of a more healthful me

to share with you soon!

Finding some Zen…..

January 14, 2013

Zen is often hard to find in our daily routines.

 As parents we rush from one activity to the next.

Last week between my drop off at school and on our therapy appointments,

I had a moment to escape to yoga.

{OM}

Yoga has been something that I view as a stress relief,

but now to me it has become a need and a way of life.

During one of these classes, my yoga instructor ended

our class with a spritz of lemon grass green tea spray

while we were relaxing in our corpse pose.

She sprayed this spray as she said to “open the mind and the senses”.

While lying there, I recalled the week.

It had been very hectic to say the least.

My son who has been progressing this school year,

but with the break {though well needed},

it has been a hard transition back.

{thank goodness for Occupational Therapy}

The spray that was spritzed over me while lost in my thoughts,

and search for peace really did open my mind and senses.

It was such a beautiful smell.

It made me realize when was the last time I wasn’t so lost

in my thoughts and worries that I actually used my senses.

Really stopped and “smelled the roses”.

As parents and caregivers to these wonderful children we get so focused

on our organized day and our to and fro that we have little time to

think about our thoughts and our needs.

When was the last time as a parent you truly listened

 to the words of a song like you did back in high school,

when you believed some songs were written just for you?

Or watched the beauty of the day despite what is going on in your life?

I believe in finding small moments for yourself.

A place or time in the day where you can find time for

your own inner thoughts to just simply be.

After that class, I cried,

I cried for no reason at all except for the pure fact that

I smelt something like I did for the first time in years.

I took a moment to breathe and to focus on the moment at hand.

I actually took a moment for myself to recharge

and to know that I am doing the best that I can.

By doing so,

it allowed me to battle the rest of the week with some renewed energy.

What is your escape?

{weekend} lovelies

January 4, 2013

I have become a bit obsessed with aztec prints lately

& have found the most wonderful

bohemian & vintage

inspired clothing company that has some of these lovely pieces.

There were so many items I loved,

that I decided to create the dream board below

{on polyvore}

to represent a few of my favorites.

Check out {Spool No.72}…

I just know you will LOVE it!

Lovely Lady

Nicole & I had a coffee date one evening this past week

to discuss {simply}, of course!

While at our local {Starbucks},

we were able to sample their new Vanilla Spice Latte.

It was DELICIOUS!

They have combined espresso with steamed milk,

rich vanilla and hints of spice!

It is topped with crushed vanilla bean,

sugar & whipped cream {if you like}.

Since I can’t seem to break away from my usual Soy Caramel Macchiato,

the barista told me I could substitute the vanilla spice in my Macchiato

instead of the usual pump of vanilla.

It was AMAZING!

I don’t know that I will ever go back!

Winter Break is coming to an end

for most of us that have children in school.

Perhaps in an effort to get organized,

you have started to plan your menu for the week ahead.

For those of you that are not vegetarian or vegan,

have you ever thought of

“Meatless Monday?”

Many people are using high quality plant proteins

in place of the typical animal proteins.

I personally am a vegetarian

{although I flirt with vegan eating from time-to-time}.

My family does continue to eat small amounts of meat.

However, as a family we have adopted plant-based eating

a few days out of the week.

If this appeals to you, refer to this list of

{7 high quality, plant-based proteins}

to help you make this healthful change!

Your bodies and our planet will thank you!

{if you are interested in learning more about the health & environmental benefits, click here}

If you decide to try out “Meatless Monday’s”

here is a yummy recipe from Whole Living for

{Quinoa Salad with Roasted Almonds}.

If you like to throw things together, without bothering with recipes

then just do this:

* mix any vegetables that you have on hand

into your already prepared quinoa.

* Then, add salt & pepper to taste,

with a decent amount of fresh squeezed juice from a lemon.

* Chill & then eat!

Healthy & delicious!

 I have always LOVED calligraphy.

Not to toot-my-own-horn,

but in the 3rd grade,

I was nominated to participate in a little competition

for having the best handwriting in my class {haha}!!

I have thought of taking classes when I have a bit more time,

although they are difficult to find!

There are a few online courses that look pretty reputable,

but why not give this a try?

Here is a tutorial from Jones Design Company on how to

{fake calligraphy}!

Wish I had come across this prior to addressing

all of my Christmas cards this year!

For Christmas this year,

my little brother planted me a variety of succulents

in a pot for my front porch.

It is beautiful!

He and my mother both have green thumbs

and a complete love of succulents which they have passed on to me.

What a great idea to plant succulents

in what would otherwise be a fountain or bird bath {genius}!

Here are {15 ideas for growing succulents}!

 This coat = complete & total LOVE!

Only a few sizes left…

and it’s on sale!!

So, if you are also in LOVE,

you better hurry up and click {here}!

Zara is one of my faves,

especially for my kids!

Can’t leave out our little guys!

Check out these ray-ban

{wayfarer}

sunglasses for little boys!

These are too cute!

Seth loves to wear sunglasses.

I may have to invest!

In 2013,

I am hoping for a weekend getaway with a few of my closest girlfriends

{hint, hint – – Husby}!

Perhaps around Mother’s Day?

Check out this beautiful Southern California resort

{Ojai Valley Inn & Spa}.

I have wanted to stay there for years!

I have an aunt & uncle that lived on a horse ranch

in Ojai when I was a child.

I used to love visiting that charming town!

Hopefully 2013 will be the year I can go back,

and relax…. poolside {wink, wink}!

The resort even offers sunrise yoga classes…

it’s perfect!

Hope you all have a {lovely} weekend!
