Baby Week and {Giveaway}

Magazine Feature

 Nicole and I feel completely honored to have had the opportunity

to write a “family focus” article in one of our local magazines.

We wrote the piece toward the end of December

in regards to our New Year’s Resolution.

Instead of making our typical goals,

we decided that we both really needed to

learn the art of being more present

{in our parenting, relationships with others, and in everyday situations}.

We also felt the need to strive for a better balance in our lives —

with some much needed attention on creating more

“mommy time”

to recharge and find brief moments of peace throughout the day.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION:

Learning the Art of Being Present While Balancing Life

Like many of you, this New Year has brought about a renewed commitment to our personal goals. Typically, the two of us have set goals that pertain to exercising more, eating healthier, becoming more organized, or even giving up that {much needed} “Cup of Joe!” This year, our focus is on a complete change in mommy perspective. We are confident that by making this critical shift in our thinking, our behavior will change too, resulting in a more balanced and satisfying life.

As mother’s we hope to create an equilibrium in our lives between meeting {or exceeding, for those of you that are “supermoms”} the needs of our family while still designating time to take care of ourselves to cultivate the person we were before children.  Since we are more nurturing by nature, we tend to meet the needs of our children, significant others, friends, or even our commitments before our own. How many times have you made plans to sneak away for a meal with a friend, or for an exercise class at a gym, only to cancel due to scheduling issues or because of mommy guilt? As mothers we hold ourselves to such high standards and are constantly putting our own needs on the backburner. Over time, this can result in feelings of resentment, depression, and burnout. It is time for a change! Research has repeatedly shown that the happiest women are those that take time out of each day to do something just for themselves {if only for brief moments of stillness}. It is through these daily happiness routines that we become more fulfilled, and in return, can take better care of those around us.

BE MINDFUL

After much soul searching and research, we have found that this sense of fulfilled peace can be obtained through a state of “mindfulness” and balance of our day-to-day activities.

Mindfulness is borrowed from the Buddhist practice of being present and aware of one’s thoughts, actions, and environment. This all begins by learning to breathe. As simple as it sounds, it is instrumental in quickly calming your central nervous system and helping you feel centered, relaxed, and in control. Instead of running through your day with quick, shallow breathing {as we tend to do}, concentrate on deep belly breaths {like you see in babies}. If short on time, simply close your eyes and focus on your breath, if only for a minute.

Once you are cognizant of your breathing, you can move on to other techniques that help you remain more present throughout the day, such as finding short periods of time for mediation. Why not spend a few minutes to yourself each day enjoying a hot shower, going for a walk or run while listening to your favorite music, keeping a gratitude journal, or connecting with something {spiritually} that is greater than yourself? Although small tasks in the grand scale of the day, picking one or two of these can truly help improve your mood and make you more productive.

Whether we are a working or stay-at-home mom, we are all incredibly busy with the daily “runaround” {as we like to call it}. It is so easy to put ourselves in autopilot and go through the day without really absorbing precious moments with our children or appreciating the beauty that’s around us. While with our children, we can learn to become more mindful by turning off our cell phones and the radio in the car. Instead, utilize that time to talk and be truly present.  This can be a great time to find out what is going on in their lives. To practice mindfulness with your children in other situations, simply focus on each interaction with them so you do not get overwhelmed. Stop reading your email or being distracted by another form of technology and show love to them by being present. This could be fixing them a snack {before they ask} and taking it to them, sitting down on the floor to play, or just walking over to them and saying something like, “I just wanted to let you know how much I love you.”

MAKE TIME

Now that you have a heightened sense of your mindfulness, you can focus on the balancing act. A good way to do this is to blend your family time while still taking a moment for yourself. An example of this would be while waiting for your child at speech, indulge in a specialty drink while reading a fashion magazine, or while doing chores around the house, listen to your favorite music.

You can create more time in your day to open up a space for yourself by simplifying your schedule. Look for what you can “undo” in your day and start saying no to requests that do not feel right or drain you of time and energy. In addition, plan a day or two a month where you purposefully let go of your daily “to do” list. Focus on the family time, schedule a spa day, or plan a date night! Remember, no one has ever perished from a messy house, for staying in their pajamas all day, or for a day or evening away from the kids!

Since we typically run our households as mothers, it can be hard to delegate and let go of certain responsibilities and tasks; however, this is crucial for freeing up time. Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of trusting family and friends and utilize your children in assisting you with age appropriate chores around the house.

HAVE FUN

Now that you have found ways to free up some room in your day, make a list of at least 25 things that you truly enjoy doing. This could be finally sitting down to read a book, taking a dance, cooking or yoga class, browsing the aisles of your favorite store, or even walking on a nearby trail or beach. Whether the task is big or small, short or time-consuming, it matters little to your brain. It will all register the same – – time spent on you.

We hope that you will join us in adding this to your list of New Year’s resolutions!  We can’t promise it will happen overnight, or that it will be easy {as life tends to throw us roadblocks along the way}. However, if we learn the art of mindfulness, practice breathing, create more space in the day {by simplifying our schedules}, and add in daily doses of personal time… we are confident that this will result in a calmer, more productive, and happier version of you!

Baked French Toast

 Warm… gooey… sweet…

D  E  L  I  C  I  O  U  S

{Baked French Toast}!

I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love french toast…

How great would this be on a lazy weekend at home?

This recipe

{adapted from the Pioneer Woman},

 is super simple to make.

You can prepare it the night before and bake in the morning,

waking your family to the smells of this decadent dish!

Or perhaps you can make it during the day,

while the kids are at school,

and surprise them with breakfast for dinner

{our personal favorite around here}!

 

{What You Will Need}

* Butter, for greasing

 * 1 loaf of crusty sourdough or french bread

{or a few mini loafs}

* 6 large eggs

* 2 cups of sweetened vanilla almond milk

{or milk of your choice}

* 1/2 cup brown sugar

* 1/2 cup granulated sugar

* 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

{2 tablespoons vanilla if you used regular milk}

 

{Topping}

* 1/2 cup flour

* 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

* 2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice

{or 1 tsp. cinnamon & 1/4 tsp. nutmeg}

* 1 stick of cold butter, cut into pieces

* chopped pecans {optional}

 

{Serve with the Following}

* butter

* warm maple syrup

* fresh berries

 

{Preparation}

For the French toast: Grease the baking pan with butter.

Cut the bread into cubes, and evenly distribute in the pan.

Crack the eggs in a big bowl.

Whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, granulated sugar and vanilla.

Pour evenly over the bread.

Cover the pan tightly and store in the fridge until needed {preferably overnight}.

 

For the Topping: Mix the flour, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice

{or cinnamon & nutmeg}, salt and pecan pieces in a separate bowl.

Stir together using a fork.

Add the cold pieces of sliced butter with a pastry cutter,

and mix it all together until the mixture resembles fine pebbles.

 

{Note: since I am always looking for ways to make things easier and kid-friendly,

 you can mix the dry ingredients with butter in a zipblock bag.

Use your hands or seal the bag and let the kids mix until topping

is combined and in crumbled pieces}.

Store the topping mixture,

 in the sealed bag,

in the fridge until ready to use.

When you’re ready to bake the casserole,

preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Remove the casserole from the fridge and sprinkle on the topping.

 

Bake for 45 minutes for a softer, more bread pudding texture,

or for 1 hour + for a firmer, crisper texture.

Scoop out individual portions.

Top with butter, a drizzle of maple syrup and fresh berries!

  

Without a doubt, this dish is one of my family’s favorites!

I seriously think the kids and I licked our plates clean!

You just can’t go wrong when butter, cinnamon, bread & syrup are in the mix!

Chocolate Chip M&M Cookie Recipe

Chocolate Chip M&M Cookies

Chocolate Chip M&M cookies are always a favorite around here.

Chocolate Chip M&M Cookies

With Valentine’s right around the corner,

many of you already have most of these

ingredients around your kitchen.

Chocolate chip cookies are easy to make and when you add

valentine m&m’s to the batter, you add a whole other dimension of

gooey chocolatey goodness.

To make these cookies a little more holiday like,

I have exchanged the normal Nestle Milk Chocolate Morsels to

Nestle Premier White Morsels as Mason and Madeline

tend to favor these more and they go with the

red, pink, and white of Valentine’s.

The kid’s loved helping of course,

a little taste of this, a little more of that…………

ended with two kids on a major sugar high.

{But hey, the cookies were good and that made us all happy!}

Chocolate Chip M&M Cookies

Adapted by Original Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

* 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour

* 1 teaspoon baking soda

* 1 teaspoon salt

* 1 cup of unsalted butter (2 sticks), softened

* 3/4 cup granulated sugar

* 3/4 cup packed brown sugar

* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

* 2 large eggs

* 1 cup Nestle Toll House Premier White Morsals

* 1 cup Valentine’s Milk Chocolate M&M’s (found these at Hobby Lobby)

Preparation:

In small bowl mix whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

Mixing flour

Beat together butter, sugars, and vanilla until light and fluffy.

Then add one egg at a time to the mixture until combined.

Slowly add in flour mixture on a low speed

{Fully mix but do not over mix}.

Lastly, add in chocolate chips and m&m’s.

With an ice cream scooper,

drop small scoops of the cookie

batter on parchment lined cookie sheets.

* I love using Martha Wrap

{but sadly I ran out before making the cookies}.

Pop into the oven at 375 degrees

for approximately 9-11 minutes.

You then have a perfect holiday cookie!

These traditional gooey chocolate chip cookies

are the perfect ending to a Friday night!

My kid’s enjoyed them!

Whip up a batch for Valentine’s…

they are sure to make any cupid happy!

I certainty do… so when I heard about BIRCHBOX,

I knew I had to give it a try!

For ten dollars a month

you get a BIRCHBOX mailed to your home which contains

a variety of hand-picked beauty & lifestyle samples!

 

 

 

 

 

The January BIRCHBOX

contained five different beauty samples:

Embryolisse // Lait-Creme Concentre 24 – Hour Miracle Cream

{full-size, $16}

“A favorite of models and makeup artists,

this French moisturizer heals dryness and leaves skin primed for foundation.”

I really do like this product.

A little seems to go a long way.

I have been using it after the shower

and before I put on my makeup.

It is not greasy and soaks in well.

 

 

The Balm Cosmetics // Put a Lid on it Eyelid Primer

{full-size, $18}

“Keep that pretty eye shadow crease-free with this stay-put primer,

which also prevents smudges and smears.”

I happen to LOVE primer.

Perhaps it is my skin, but I really feel like I need it

in order for my makeup to last throughout the day.

I had just run out… so this was a great treat!

It works beautifully!

 

 

Ojon //Damage Reverse Instant Restorative Hair Serum

{full-size $25}

“Repair stressed strands with this aromatic hair treatment –

exotic ojon and macadamia oils work together to smooth and hydrate hair.”

I have been using this on my wet hair,  just prior to blowdrying.

Honestly, I haven’t noticed a difference with this product.

I think I prefer Moroccan Oil in both smell and

overall control of my thick hair.

 

 

 Aerie // Shimmer Fragrance

{full-size $14.95 – $39.95}

“This light-as-air blend of bergamot, peony, and vanilla feels fresh and warm.”

I do agree… it has a fresh smell.

I tend to get headaches with new fragrances…

unfortunately, I did with this one, too.

Miss Sophia Blue was fond of it, however.

 

 

Eyeko // Skinny Liquid Eyeliner

{full-size $15}

 “This UK import features a user-friendly pen applicator and super smooth formula.”

Okay… I saved my favorite product sample for last!

I was impressed on the sample size.

It honestly is as big as my MAC liquid eyeliner.

I have used this a few times in the past week.

It stays put, but still washes away easily at the end of the day.

I am super happy with this liner and love that it is only $15 regularly.

It glides on easily and is perfect for that vintage cat-eye!

 

 

Overall, I was pretty happy with the samples I received!

Ten dollars seemed like a fair amount to pay

since the eyeliner was a decent size.

 If you do decide to sign-up, just know there can be a short wait.

After signing up on their website, I did have to wait

approximately three weeks before

I received an email indicating that I had 72-hours to pay

and put in my shipping information

{after the 72-hours, they go on to the next person on the list}.
